Walking Barefoot Inside and Outside

There are countries around the globe that encourage children to walk barefoot during inside and outside activities. Research has shown that wearing shoes at an early age may negatively affect the gait, or walking style, and there may be evidence that supports children who wear shoes before the age of six may be prone to having flat feet. Conversely, walking barefoot during these same years may have numerous benefits that can affect more than the feet. These can include improved motor skills, and increased foot strength, and the nerve endings in the feet may be stimulated. Additionally, potential injuries may be prevented when children walk barefoot, and this may be a result of having wider feet that can distribute body weight more evenly. The feet can feel like they are being massaged while walking on different outside surfaces such as grass and sand. The arches may become stronger while walking on various surfaces that can including uneven ground and pebbles, which may help to develop a normal gait pattern. If you have concerns about having your child walk barefoot, please consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of Comprehensive Footcare Clinic - Hawaii. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Many people have said the pain can become so debilitating that it can be difficult to walk up the steps, and a lightweight sheet that is on top of the affected toe may cause excruciating pain. Gout attacks may be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle. This can include reducing the intake of red meat, alcohol beverages, sugary drinks, and shellfish. Additionally, it is beneficial to incorporate a gentle exercise program into your daily routine, and this may help to shed additional weight. Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

How Do Sesamoid Bones Become Inflamed?

There are two bones that lie in the tendons beneath the joint in the big toe. These are known as the sesamoid bones, and their function is to help the foot to push off while walking. People who frequently run may experience a condition that is called sesamoiditis. This can happen when the sesamoid bones become inflamed from excessive pressure and the impact the bones endure while running. Symptoms that many people have with this condition can be a sudden sharp pain, which may indicate a fracture has happened. More commonly, a burning pain may occur, which may be a sign of nerve damage. Additionally, the ball of the foot can be tender while walking on it, and it may feel like there is a pebble in the shoe. Poor foot mechanics may lead to developing sesamoiditis, and the tendon that houses the sesamoid bones may be tight. This condition can negatively impact completing daily activities, and it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist if you have any of the above symptoms.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact one of our podiatrists of Comprehensive Footcare Clinic - Hawaii. Our doctors will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Honolulu, HI . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Toenail fungus is an ailment that affects many people worldwide. It is a contagious fungal infection that can happen from using public swimming pools, shower room floors, and locker rooms. It can be unsightly, and many people are self-conscious of their feet, especially during the warmer months when flip-flops are worn. There is a possible remedy that patients can take advantage of, and this is referred to as laser treatment for toenail fungus. It is done by targeting a laser directly into the nail bed and is generally painless. There are advantages to having this type of treatment performed, including destroying the fungus without interfering with the surrounding skin, and there are typically no side effects. Research has shown there is a high percentage rate of this type of treatment being effective. If you have toenail fungus and are interested in learning about laser treatment, please confer with a podiatrist who can effectively perform this procedure.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.
